CPS take No Further Action against Celebrity Musician in controlling and coercive behaviour allegations.

Mr xx is a well-known singer and songwriter who engaged in a relationship with a younger lady during the COVID 19 pandemic. During the lockdown it was alleged that xx engaged in a course of controlling and coercive behaviour against the complainant contrary to section 76 of the Serious Crime Act 2015.

The complainant went to the Police who undertook an investigation. xx was recommended the services of Quentin Hunt, a specialist criminal defence barrister who undertook looking after xx’s interests.

Quentin was able to liaise with the police in respect of their dealing with this complaint. The matter was particularly sensitive due to potential reputational damage to Quentin’s client. Quentin worked in conjunction with the Police to ensure that the matter was not publicised and successfully prevented the complainant in the case undertaking a course of action that was designed to publicise the allegations and police investigation.

The Police investigation and referral to the Crown Prosecution Service took a long time and Quentin represented xx throughout. This involved the dealing with arranging police interviews, the provision of statements and relevant evidence to the Police, and the drafting and submission of lengthy pre-charge representations to the Crown Prosecution Service. Working in conjunction with the client Quentin was able to put together a comprehensive package of evidence to demonstrate not only that the complainant’s allegations were false but also that the complainant had an ulterior motive to pursue the allegations.

The hard work paid off. In time Quentin received notification from the Crown Prosecution Service that they were to take No Further Action against xx and that he would not face criminal charges. Xx was delighted and could continue his life without the worry and stress of prosecution.
