Quentin Secures acquittal for company director accused of stalking Police Officer.

Quentin Secures Not Guilty verdict for company director accused of stalking Police Officer.

Mr AG was a company director accused of stalking an ex-partner who he had met over a social media dating application. Having dated for period of time they split up and he is said to have stalked her following the relationship break up. Charges were brought that alleged stalking involving serious alarm or distress contrary to section 4A(1)(b)(ii) and 5 of the Protection from Harassment Act 1997.

The stalking was said to have consisted of a large number of particulars including

  • Unwanted text messages;
  • Unwanted telephone calls;
  • Following her;
  • Turning up at places where he knew she would be;

AG protested his innocence and instructed criminal defence barrister Quentin Hunt to represent him on a direct public access basis.

The case was not without its problems, the complainant in the case was a serving police officer and gave six witness statements of considerable detail outlining what she said was the defendant’s stalking behaviour. AG on the other hand maintained that the allegations were untrue and were concocted by the complainant in an attempt to get revenge for his infidelity during their relationship.

The case was heard at Harrow Crown Court. Quentin had made numerous detailed disclosure requests from the prosecution under the Criminal Procedure and Investigations Act 1997 relating to telephone and other materials. The results of these disclosure requests, together with copious amounts of defence evidence, had been collated into a large defence bundle that was used as the basis for the defence case.

By the detailed analysis of the prosecution case in light of objective defence evidence, Quentin was able to unravel the prosecution case and demonstrate falsehoods in the complainant’s account. A thorough and relentless cross examination of the complainant also attempted to lay bare her motives for making false allegations against Mr AG.

Quentin also took witness statements from a large number of defence witnesses who were able to give a combination of factual and character evidence that was very beneficial to AG, many of these witnesses were called to give evidence during the trial.

Following a seven day trial, the jury returned unanimous verdicts of Not Guilty and AG was able to leave Court with no convictions to his name. This was very important for him, both in terms of his reputation and in terms of his ability to maintain his business interests.
